Chapter 4 – Physiological knowledge for health psychology
This chapter provides an overview of the physiological systems most relevant to the study of health psychology. We will look at the human nervous system, brain, endocrine system and the body’s physiological response to stress. Understanding the cardiovascular disease and chronic lung disease is essential, as both are leading causes of death and disability. The chapter also explores the immune system, providing a foundation for subsequent chapters in which we learn how stress can affect immune functioning. Additionally, understanding the physiological systems involved in cancer, diabetes and obesity, is crucial, as these conditions are leading causes of disease burden and are strongly influences by lifestyle factors.
