Chapter 1 – Health psychology context setting: Careers, cultures and diversity

This chapter provides a brief introduction to health psychology, before exploring the diverse contexts in which health psychologist work, the knowledge they draw on and how to become a health psychologist in the UK. We are introduced to the impacts of colonisation on Indigenous Peoples and concepts pertaining to diversity and inclusion, including the importance of ethnic identities. In addition, the chapter explores the key differences in terminology used to describe sex, gender, sexual orientation and gender identity. Multiple minoritised identities are highlighted as intersectional sources of oppression and privilege. Together the topics covered in this chapter underscore the need for inclusive and culturally responsive healthcare services and practices that will be explore throughout this book.
