Chapter 6 – Adherence
This chapter explores the nature of adherence and non adherence, through an expanded model that builds on Ley’s (1986) cognitive model, incorporating factors such as culture, ethnicity and minority status and social determinants of health. We examine what heath literacy is, how it influences adherence, how health literacy is measured and how cultural and intersectionality shape adherence. We explore the World Health Organisation’s Multidimensional Adherence Model that outlines the multiplicity of factors that can impact on medication adherence. We then consider medication adherence in relation to ethnicity, religious beliefs, chronic disease and healthcare system issues. We consider ways in which medication adherence can be improved and examine the hierarchical model for medication adherence (Unni & Bae, 2022). Finally, we examine factors than impact on non-attendance at medical appointments.
