Chapter 12: Communicating Comfort and Support

One vital function served by interpersonal communication is the provision of comfort and support. This chapter examines the nonverbal and verbal messages people use to provide support in various forms. How comforting unfolds through the back-and-forth exchange of messages between partners is described, as well as the role of support-seekers in this process and differences across cultures. When significant stressors emerge, such as a cancer diagnosis or the death of a loved one, supportive communication can provide important resources, improve people’s emotional state, bolster self-confidence, or connect people with other sources of help. Throughout the chapter, recommendations for improving the communication of support and comfort are provided.
