Chapter 4:<\/span> Nonverbal Communication<\/h2>\n\n\n

Nonverbal communication encompasses how people create and exchange meaning through nonverbal behavior. This chapter reviews the channels through which nonverbal messages are conveyed, and characteristics of nonverbal communication as a symbol system. Four functions of nonverbal communication \u2013 communicating emotion, communicating liking, communicating power and status, and regulating conversation \u2013 are discussed. The chapter identifies how verbal and nonverbal communication come together in interactions, and it delves into interactions that involve deception or negotiate sexual intimacy. Suggestions for improving nonverbal communication include developing an awareness of nonverbal cues, using nonverbal cues to manage relationships and interactions, and navigating high-stakes interactions where the integration of verbal and nonverbal communication is especially consequential.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n
