Chapter 7 – Adverbs
The use of adverbs to modify other parts of speech is explained initially and it is pointed out that there are different types of adverbs. The key points box explains that the use of adverbs is similar to English (modifying verbs, adjectives etc.), their formation following a similar principle (the addition of -ment to the adjective, where English adds -ly). The complexities of the addition of -ment are examined subsequently and summarised in a table. The different types of adverbs (time, place manner etc.) are then surveyed, with a listing of the most important adverbs in each category. The next section covers the comparison of adverbs, and this is followed by an examination of the position of adverbs within the sentence. The last part of the chapter contains a passage with many representative adverbs in it, which are then analysed. At the end of the chapter there are five exercises for grammar practice.
