Chapter 6 – Numbers
The three types of numbers covered in this chapter are: cardinal, used for counting (2, 12 etc), ordinal, used for putting things in order (deuxième, sixième etc.), and numbers used for approximate quantities (une douzaine etc.). The many differences between French and English in the formation and use of numbers are then examined in detail. In the first section a list of cardinal numbers is followed by a description of the following: how these numbers are linked, rules concerning plurals, the pronunciation of certain numbers and the positioning of numbers after the noun. The second section, on ordinals, lists these numbers and describes their formation. A short section on approximate numbers follows. Further sections cover the use of numbers for time, dates, measurements and fractions. The final section lists quantifiers and their uses. The last part of the chapter contains a passage full of numbers representing the types covered in the chapter, which are then analysed. At the end of the chapter there are five exercises for grammar practice.
