Chapter 5 – Adjectives
First this chapter makes the general point that adjectives are used in a similar way in French as in English, but the key points list significant differences, in that French adjectives have to agree with nouns, in gender and number, and that adjectives are usually placed after the noun. The chapter goes on to describe the position of adjectives, including cases where they are placed before the noun and where the position before or after the noun changes the meaning of the adjective. The second section examines the ways in which the feminine forms of adjectives are made, by changing the ending of the masculine form. The plural of adjectives is the subject of the next section. This is followed by several sections which examine specific aspects pertaining to adjectives, such as loan words and shortened adjectives. The final two sections describe the comparison of adjectives and verbal adjectives. The last part of the chapter contains a literary passage with many representative adjectives in it, which are then analysed. At the end of the chapter there are five exercises for grammar practice.
