Religion and spirituality can be an important protective factor, as well as a key resource, for those who experience trauma and other mental health conditions. Many, however, experience challenges related to religion and spirituality, especially when in the throes of difficult life events. This chapter explores the role of religion and spirituality in the context of trauma informed mental health care. The chapter begins with an overview of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and related mental health challenges and their prevalence and impact on individuals and society. To help set the context for a holistic care approach that includes the religious/spiritual element, various conceptualizations of religion and spirituality across the mental health fields are presented. The heart of the chapter focuses on the impact of trauma on one’s meaning making system, including religious and spiritual meaning making. Next, posttraumatic growth (PTG) theory is discussed to help provide insight into how positive change processes, including religious/spiritual change, can occur following trauma related mental health challenges. Finally, recommendations are provided for practitioners who may be interested in incorporating religion/spirituality as part of trauma informed mental health practice. Excerpts and summary statements from a study with traumatized military veterans are dispersed throughout the chapter to provide real life context illustrating how trauma, mental health and religion/spirituality can intersect, and ways practitioners can help individuals work through such issues.

Reflective Questions

Designed to encourage critical thinking, real-world application, and meaningful discussion.

How does spirituality contribute to recovery beyond symptom reduction?

What ethical boundaries must clinicians maintain when discussing spirituality?

How can spirituality function as both protective and harmful?

Resource Connect

Links to professional standards, policy frameworks, and cross-referenced chapters that support deeper exploration.content.

FICA Spiritual History Tool

The George Washington Institute for Spirituality and Health’s FICA Spiritual History Tool provides a brief framework for asking about faith or beliefs, their importance and influence, spiritual community, and how the client would like these concerns addressed in care.
