Members of sexual minority groups often experience the personal discomfort of service providers when seeking health and mental health services. This often lends itself to disparity in care and a lack of understanding of the unique challenges they face. Since 2012, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) people have been identified by the United States Department of Health and Human Services as an at-risk population as a result of having social, economic and environmental disadvantages. This chapter will discuss some of the critical factors in identifying and providing for the unique needs and services of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender, or sexual minority client in a community setting.
