This is harder than you might imagine. Unlike written words which have a space between them, spoken words often run together and, unlike written text, once uttered, the signal disappears. Yet we are able to understand speakers of our own language remarkably efficiently. We discuss some models of spoken word recognition before moving on to consider producing longer strings of speech than single words: sentences. We then move away from speech to consider some other aspects of language such as language and thought, bilingualism, and language and ageing.

<media-player  load="visible" id="vidstack-video-block_6ca3139800b4b9e2d253cb24e7aaf02f" class="vidstack-video" title="Chapter 8 - Introduction" src="https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/s3-euw1-ap-pe-ws4-cws-documents.ri-prod/9780367703516/CPCW-Chapter-8.mp4">
  <media-provider>
                  <track src="https://cdn.routledgelearning.com/wp-content/uploads/assets/sites/4/CPCW-Chapter-8-en-US.vtt" kind="subtitles" srclang="en" label="English">
                        <media-poster
          class="vds-poster"
          alt="">
        </media-poster>

  </media-provider>
  <media-video-layout></media-video-layout>
  <media-controls class="vds-controls">
      <media-controls-group class="vds-controls-group"></media-controls-group>
  </media-controls>
</media-player>

Chapter 8 – Flashcards

co-articulation

Individual phonemes or basic speech sounds are pronounced differently according to the phonemes immediately preceding or following them speech perception.

phoneme

The smallest sound unit that combines with other sound units to make words. ‘Ship’ has 3 phonemes: /ʃ/, /ɪ/, /p/.
