Chapter 18 – Older adults in the Digital Age<\/h1>\n\n\n

Research on the use of technology by older adults is diverse, ranging from how technology may support them to age in place by improving their ability to live and age independently (Baldassar et al., 2017), to increasing the ability of older adults with age-related cognitive decline to interpret conversation semantics through the use of emojis (Garcia et al., 2022). However older adults may also face negative impacts as a result of their technology use such as isolation (Ward et al., 2020, Power et al., 2019) and cybersecurity threats (Morrison et al., 2020). This chapter will discuss the relationship between older adults and technology, the barriers to technology use, as well as the positive and negative impacts resulting from their interactions with technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
