Chapter 3 – Computer-Mediated Communication and Online Media<\/h1>\n\n\n

This chapter will consider the variety of communication tools used online, as well as the history of computer-mediated communication (CMC), with particular focus on how the Internet has become an increasingly interactive medium in recent years. The language used online will be examined, especially in relation to abbreviations, acronyms, paralanguage, and emoji. The chapter will consider how various communication theories can be used to understand online communications, especially considering Walther’s (1996) hyperpersonal communication model. Finally, the chapter will provide a brief introduction to the concepts of impression management, anonymity, disinhibition, and privacy that will be considered in more detail in the following chapters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
